WGBH The World Social Media Internship
WGBH is public service media for New England - on TV, radio, the Web, and out in the community.
We're the single largest producer of PBS prime-time and online programming, and a major source of
programs heard on public radio from coast to coast. We're a pioneer in educational multimedia and
in media access technologies for people with hearing or vision loss.
The WGBH Internship Program is designed to help students and the Foundation meet our
mutual educational goals. 'GBH wants to provide students with hands-on experience
through daily activities and assigned long-term projects.
Department Description:
The World is a one-hour, nationally distributed weekday radio public affairs program,
co-produced by WGBH, the BBC and Public Radio International (PRI). The show offers a mix
of news, features, interviews and music from around the globe, developed specifically for
an American audience. The program presents listeners with different perspectives on the
world's people, events and trends. Drawing on its unique network of international
correspondents, The World provides a broader picture of global events by reporting on a
range of topics, including science, business, sports, and the arts, as well as news. The
department also produces several original podcasts.
The World's web site, theworld.org, repurposes radio content to make it appropriate
for the on-line audience and creates original content to complement and expand on the
existing content. The World seeks to optimize its use of social media and other relevant
tools to maximize user engagement and enhance the user experience.
Internship Experience:
The World's Social Media and Outreach Intern will have the opportunity to gain an
in-depth understanding of the editorial and production process of one of the most
highly regarded programs in the public radio system. The intern will gain experience
of working in a fast-paced newsroom environment with daily deadlines.
The intern will also gain a thorough understanding of the production process behind
theworld.org and work collaboratively as one
of its team members. Under the direction of the web editor the intern will play a key
role in the department's social media strategy: determining topics, creating messages,
selecting platforms, scheduling and using such media as appropriate. The intern will also
assist reporters and producers reach out to relevant individuals and platforms to
increase and enhance the impact of The World's content.
Projects and tasks may include:
- Research and use social media as a platform to deliver World content.
- Identify appropriate content to deliver by social media.
- Devise appropriate messaging for social media.
- Assist in the development of The World's social media strategy.
- Write a paper advising the department on how it can develop its use of social media.
- Identify bloggers and publications who might be interested in sharing World content with their communities.
- Contact blogger and publications to advise them of appropriate content.
- Research social media channels for digital reporting applications.
Looking For:
- Majors preferred but not limited to: Journalism, Communication, English, International Relations,
- Enthusiastic and experienced user of online social networking platforms (e.g. Facebook, Twitter).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience of editorial judgment.
- Proficiency in internet research.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize.
- Eagerness to learn new skills and willingness to explore new challenges.
- Strong follow-through and attention to detail.
- 20 hours per week commitment (Hours are flexible to work around a school schedule)

WGBH Intern Requirements:
- WGBH internships are open only to students enrolled in an accredited college or university.
- Internships are unpaid.
