Radio Archiving Music Library Internship
Department Description:
WGBH Radio Boston is offering an internship focusing on the preservation and
maintenance of its sound recording collections: The WGBH Music Library, with
a collection of over 80,000 Classical, Jazz, Folk, Blues, Celtic and World music
recordings, and the Radio Archives, including close to 25,000 items dating back
to the inauguration of the station in the early '50s.
WGBH Intern Requirements:
- WGBH internships are open only to students enrolled in an accredited college or university.
- Interns must receive college credit for the internship.
- Internships are unpaid.
College Major Desire:
This internship will include working with several on-going projects involved in the
renovation and development of the WGBH Music Library database and the preservation,
evaluation and description of historic recordings in the WGBH Radio Archives. Students
working towards degrees in Music, Media & Broadcast Communications, Library Science, etc.
are encouraged to apply.
Skills Preferred:
Prospective interns should have the following qualifications:
- Between 6 and 12 hours per week (negotiated with student and school) to
devote to the internship for a complete semester.
- Basic computer skills.
- A broad knowledge of either Classical, Jazz/Blues and/or Celtic/Folk/World music.
Duties include but are not limited to:
An ideal candidate will have interest in learning about the maintenance and
renovation of a major music library and sound recording archive at New England's
premiere public radio station. Depending on the prospective intern's knowledge,
skills and availability, tasks and learning opportunities may include:
- Information entry and editing in the new Music Library Database.
- Renovation of Radio Archives database.
- Conservation of at-risk archival audio recordings.
- Migration of analog recordings to digital format.
