NOVA Science Unit Labs Internship
WGBH is public service media for New England - on TV, radio, the Web, and out in the community.
We're the single largest producer of PBS prime-time and online programming, and a major source of
programs heard on public radio from coast to coast. We're a pioneer in educational multimedia and
in media access technologies for people with hearing or vision loss.
Department Description:
NOVA is the nation's longest running and most respected primetime science series. WGBH/Boston is in
the process of building on the success of its award-winning NOVA television series and website with
the development and launch of NOVA Labs. NOVA Labs is a new digital platform designed to become the
premier online resource for diverse youth ages 13 to 18 to participate in real world scientific
problem-solving and discoveries, collaborate with peers, and interact with experts. At a time when the
United States is struggling to compete with other global leaders in science, NOVA Labs will help expand
the pipeline of young people interested in and educationally prepared for careers in science and engineering.
NOVA Labs is part of a three-pronged initiative to create a comprehensive platform for the "best of science"
online. Dubbed NOVA 3.0, the strategy is designed to serve three audiences with distinct needs - curious adults,
teachers, and science-savvy youth - within a seamlessly integrated digital platform.
Internship Description:
Assisting in the Research and Development of NOVA Labs by:
-Investigating current research methodologies from a range of different scientific fields, web-based data analysis software,
and media that is aligned with educational best practices- with an eye towards usability and formatting for easy accessibility.
-Assisting in the planning and implementation of scientific research summits at WGBH with partner scientists from a range of scientific fields.
-Communicating and overseeing logistics with partner scientists and researchers.
Skills Preferred:
Graduate student in Education with an undergraduate degree in Science, Technology or Math.
Strong Undergraduate majors in Science or Math with an interest in Education and Science Communication will be considered.
Strong quantitative skills and an understanding of the nature and process of scientific research.
Comfortable using web-based social network programs for communicating and working with a large online community.
Comfort with using Excel and database management programs. Ability to test and report on various scientific data analysis websites.
WGBH Intern Requirements:
- WGBH internships are open only to students enrolled in an accredited college or university.
- Internships are unpaid.
