Basic Black Internship
Semester: Fall, Spring, and Summer (Applications are accepted and evaluated on a rolling basis -
it is best to apply as soon as you are able)
Under the supervision of the series producer, Basic Black interns are responsible for assisting
the staff in various phases of the process of producing a studio-based show. *Please note that this
internship does not involve field production or editing.
The internship position at Basic Black will provide opportunities for students to learn about
the administrative aspects of producing a public affairs television series, including: researching
show ideas and topics and assisting the associate producer and production assistant in pre- and
post-production coordinating. While the internship is heavily administrative in nature, it offers
students an opportunity to gain an understanding of the industry through the hands-on experiences
provided.
In providing an opportunity for students to learn production, the interns are required to have the following skills:
- knowledge of broadcast media;
- excellent oral and written skills;
- familiarity with Microsoft Word, FileMaker Pro, and On-line services;
- excellent research skills;
- a general sense of administrative management
- display tremendous initiative
- demonstrate New Media savvy
Qualified interns working with Basic Black will be required to perform the following duties:
- Assist show staff in various aspects of production such as:
- research show topics via newspapers, magazines, and online services and keeping timely
files on various topics and issues pertaining to Basic Black
- assist with sorting and organizing production materials
- assist in logging tapes and dubbing
- attend all studio productions when available and assisting with green room set-up
- provide clerical and administrative support to the Production Assistant,
Associate Producer, and Series Producer to learn the administrative aspects of production
- provide clerical and administrative support to the Production Secretary and Series Producer to learn administrative aspect of production.
- perform related duties as assigned
In accordance with WGBH Educational Foundation's Intern/Work programs, the student. must:
- be in attendance of an accredited college or university at the undergraduate or graduate level
- earn academic credit during internship
- provide confirmation of credit eligibility from college registrar's office
- work a minimum of 4 hours per week but no more than 20
