WGBH Art Auction Internship
WGBH is public service media for New England - on TV, radio, the Web, and out in the community.
We're the single largest producer of PBS prime-time and online programming, and a major source of
programs heard on public radio from coast to coast. We're a pioneer in educational multimedia and
in media access technologies for people with hearing or vision loss.
The WGBH Internship Program is designed to help students and the Foundation meet our mutual
educational goals. 'GBH wants to provide students with hands-on experience through daily activities
and assigned long-term projects.
Department Description:
The mission of the Member Development Department is to identify new; and cultivate, steward and
increase commitments of existing relationships between The WGBH Educational Foundation and its
membership and in-kind donor constituency while adhering to the highest standards of quality and
service for which WGBH is known. Member Marketing Initiatives (MMI) provides partnership
opportunities to local companies and organizations that share with WGBH a common value and
commitment to the education and cultural enrichment of our community. Through various levels of
participation and project areas, such as affinity clubs, Member Discount Partners, Auction, Business
Member Partners can help support WGBH's ongoing fundraising efforts while taking part in integrated
multimedia relationships that best meets their needs and philanthropic goals.
Internship Description:
The Member Marketing Initiatives intern will have the opportunity to work on the Fine Art
Auction, a major fundraising event that brings in over $80,000 annually. This auction will take
place February-March 2012. It will be online for three weeks and will culminate with a televised
auction broadcast on Channel 2.
The intern will have the opportunity to engage 100+ community donors and gain a valuable in-depth
look at fundraising within the community on several media platforms. The intern will also experience
first-hand fundraising administration and management.
Projects and tasks may include:
- Fine Art Auction Projects and tasks may include
- Contact potential donors/artists (via phone or email) to inform them about the auction
- Increase the Art Auction's presence on Facebook & Twitter, including writing posts and uploading images
- Work directly with local art associations, art publications, auction houses and bloggers to promote the auction
- Research
- Conduct background research as need on artwork and/or artists
- Use online resources to identify potential new partnerships for Auction and other MMI projects
- Event Planning
- Assist in the planning of the Art Preview Party, a WGBH sponsored event. This includes coordinating the printing and mailing of invitations, displaying the artwork for the party, help invited guests and VIPs place their auction bids during the party.
- Contribute to the design and layout of the art auction print catalogue, including writing copy and fact-checking information
- Support the Art Auction Manger and producers in planning the online auction & broadcast taping. This may include writing scripts, coordinating interviews with artists, finding images/logos online to accompany donated items, and/or calling donors to ask them to email images/logos
- Database Maintenance and Management
- Help maintain donor information in our main database
- Assist with some data migration and upkeep of main database onto Salesforce.com CRM System as needed
Skills Preferred:
- Detail oriented
- Must be highly organized and able to time-manage efficiently
- Strong writing skills, please include 2-3 brief writing samples
- Basic HTML experience preferred
- Feel comfortable with Internet research, as well as simple graphics tasks, such as finding and saving images online & uploading images.
- Ability to lift, stand, bend (for tasks such as filing, organizing inventory)
- Comfortable with doing follow-up on the phone/good phone demeanor
- Majors preferred but not limited to: Marketing and Public Relations, Communications, Art History and Business
- Interest in Fundraising and Non-Profit is a plus
A commitment of 12-15 hours per week through December 17, 2011 is ideal (hours are flexible to work with a school schedule).
WGBH Intern Requirements:
- WGBH internships are open only to students enrolled in an accredited college or university.
- Internships are unpaid.
